Hi, I'm Brooke.
I'm a Korean American multidisciplinary artist originally from Salt Lake City and currently based in Oregon.
I have had a lifetime of art exploration. Creating is my way of expressing the human experiences and emotions that are difficult to describe with words. I often find myself interested in new mediums and taking deep dives into learning new skills. I am currently working on ceramic sculptures, watercolor paintings, linocut prints, and photography.
Photography
My first love was photography. When I was a teen my best friend bought me my first DSLR (generous friend, I know) and I took that camera everywhere. I tried a lot of things out but was always drawn to capturing people and self portraits. I spent a decade behind the camera shooting personally and professionally before I happened upon a ceramics course during my final semester at the University of Utah. I immediately fell in love with a new medium.
Ceramics
I studied for two years under Diane Shaw at the historic Stoker School in Bountiful, Utah before continuing to create in my own studio. I spent many years exploring wheel throwing, hand building, slip casting, and sculpting. Since 2024 I've settled into my favorite way to use clay through sculpting female busts with occasional surrealism sprinkled in.I like to work in small scale, my sculptures are no bigger than 8 inches tall. Tiny intricate details entice me.
Block Printing
In 2025 I began exploring two new mediums - block printing and painting. I've been wanting to incorporate 2D art into my practice for a while and finally dipped my toe into something new. My block printing consists of carving linoleum with the tiniest tools I can get my hands on. I spend on average 10-20 hours creating each design. I typically carve on a 5x7in block under a magnifying glass. Carving is high stakes as one stray mark is irreversible and hard to hide seamlessly into the design. I then hand print my designs with oil based ink and a hand press.
Watercolor
In order to save my aching neck and fingers from the long hours of block printing I also began exploring watercolor painting with pen and ink additions. I'm trying to lean into a slightly less refined approach and incorporate even more surrealism with these paintings. It's brand new, frustrating, daunting, and exciting.
Thank you
I've realized that I will always be including different mediums into my art practice. I love that each one informs the other and gives my brain and body something new to get immersed in. I hope you'll enjoy discovering how my personal essence shows up in each medium. Thanks for being here.
